This year Singapore Math is being introduced to the students of Lake Drive School, in a program led by teachers Suzanne Maglio and Deanna Richter.
Bob Hogan, who first brought Singapore Math to the United States, piloted this teacher directed program in Massachusetts. It has successfully improved math test scores since being introduced there.
Singapore Math incorporates into each lesson mental math, word problems, teacher directed instruction and independent practice. Using manipulatives such as place value strips and place value discs, the system focuses on student mastery and builds upon prior learned concepts.
A key component of Singapore Math is the work done on word problems. By using a visual and systematic approach the teachers are able to utilize an 8-step process to work through any word problem the students might encounter.
The 8-steps are as follows: |
1. |
Read the whole problem. |
2. |
Identify the who. |
3. |
Identify the what. |
4. |
Draw a unit bar. |
5. |
Read each sentence one at a time and add information. |
6. |
Draw the question mark. |
7. |
Do the math (to the right). |
8. |
Write a complete sentence to answer the problem.
