What is the focus of the Lake Drive Program?
The school is dedicated to the development of literacy and communication so that students can function competitively within the hearing community. A team of trained paraprofessionals and other related service providers, including educational audiologists, speech/language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, counselors, and sign language interpreters, complement our highly qualified professional staff.
How does the Lake Drive staff maintain current knowledge with respect
to innovative instructional strategies and technology?
All staff receives comprehensive training in the latest developments in
technology and strategies for enhancing children's learning. Staff has
up-to-date knowledge and skills for working with children with cochlear
implants. We offer practical skills programming for students who need direct
application of skills for reinforcement and comprehension.
Describe the scope of the educational programming that the Lake Drive
Program offers.
The school has a comprehensive academic program that is enhanced by allied
subjects including art, music, dance, instrumental music, drama, library,
physical education and extracurricular sports. All classrooms in the Lake
Drive Program have a high ratio of computers to students with access to
computer-assisted learning opportunities and the Internet. The Lake Drive
School building also provides cable TV access in each classroom. There is a
state of the art audiological diagnostic testing center which has the
capacity to program cochlear implants.
Do Lake Drive students have the opportunity to be educated in the
mainstream?
Mainstream education with comprehensive support services is available
throughout the Mountain Lakes school district for academically able
students. In addition, there are preschool and early elementary inclusion
classrooms combining community children and children with hearing loss.
There is also a team of mainstream resource consultants who provide support
and in-service education to students in their home school districts.
