The Lake Side Cafe Dedication to Tracy Day

Tracy Day was a speech/language pathologist who worked at the Lake Drive Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children for seven years.  At the very young age of twenty-five, Tracy was diagnosed with breast cancer, which began her long and courageous journey to fight the disease.   Nine years following her diagnosis, on November 16, 2000, Tracy’s battle was over and at thirty-four years of age, she passed away.

While she had powerful energy and great enthusiasm toward her profession, Tracy’s true passion was in her desire to help educate students who were bright in ways that a pure academic program would not typically reveal.  She held a special place in her heart for these students, who needed many different contexts in which to shine.  It was Tracy’s Dream that such a context be created, which would allow these students the opportunity to learn and apply their skills within meaningful experiences.   Funds that were raised in Tracy’s honor and memory were specifically dedicated to be used to establish programs that would allow the multiple parts of Tracy’s Dream to become a reality.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the passing of Tracy Day, the Lake Drive Program will dedicate the "Lake Side Cafe" on Tuesday, November 16th.  The creation of the cafe, which is housed in the Lake Drive building, was designed to provide high school aged students a "Structured Learning Experience" (SLE), in order to allow them opportunities to gain career skills related to the restaurant industry.  The goal is to carry over lessons from this SLE into a community work site in which the students may seek employment.  It is with great pride, pleasure and love that we dedicate the Cafe to
Tracy Day.

Lake Drive Reaches Out to Support the Military…

Halloween is a time for imagination and fun for kids of all ages. This year, it was also a time to remember those in uniform and how to bring a bit of Halloween enjoyment to them. Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to troops overseas, requests donations of Halloween (or Easter) candy that is then shipped in the packages. The Lake Drive middle school students at the Briarcliff School in Mountain Lakes decided to run a Halloween candy drive. They assembled fliers with donation baggies, drew colorful posters with inviting messages, and creatively decorated a collection box for the donations. Each of the 380 plus students in the school received a baggie with a sticker on it. The students were asked to share some of their Halloween candy and to write and/or draw a greeting on the sticker for an individual soldier. The baggies were to be returned the day after Halloween. The result was 73 lbs of candy! The baggies came back with all sorts of supportive messages and fun drawings on them. In addition, families donated full unopened bags and cartons of candy. The donated candy was mailed to Operation Gratitude in three large boxes. The children had the opportunity to give of their own gathered commodity and, in the process, consider the great sacrifice made by others to ensure their safety and freedom here. Operation Gratitude has a number of ideas for helping their cause; for more information, please visit their site: operationgratitude.com.

Lake Drive Students at Briarcliff School Again Reach Out to the Military Community

The 11-15 year old students in Mrs. Distell and Mrs. Crimmins's Communication Skills class have joined those in Mrs. Petrocco's Communciation Skills class in creating homemade holiday cards for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, sponsored by the American Red Cross.
Each year, the Red Cross runs this program, which distributes the student-made holiday cards to our American service members, their families and veterans.  The creative and hard-working students have been working very hard to produce original, handmade cards, and have written their own messages of appreciation and good wishes for our servicemen and women.

These Lake Drive students have been having a lot of fun while learning valuable lessons in the development of empathy for others, understanding the perspectives of other people, and increasing their own self-esteem by helping others.

Some "Smart Moves" for Family Fitness for Readers to Enjoy and to Follow~

Provide positive rewards for your child when he or she engages in physical activities, such as workout clothes, a new basketball, or an evening of roller-skating.  Provide positive feedback about your child's lifestyle changes.  Remember not to focus on the scale (for you or your child).  Be your child's "exercise buddy".  Plan daily walks or bike rides and set goals together for increasing physical activity rather than for losing weight.  It's also great "bonding" time!  As you schedule your child's extracurricular activities, remember to plan time for exercise and activity as a priority for the entire family.  Don't just "squeeze it in".    Source:  American Physical Therapy Association

Elementary Magic at Lake Drive

During the month of November, Ms. Franklin's preschool class studied the human body.  After a week of learning all about their facial features, students made delicious face cookies.  M&M candies and string licorice helped them to recreate eye color and hair type!  Next, they learned body parts and made gingerbread bread men.  It was a very tasty month!

Mrs. Jennifer Lechleiter's amazing four, five, six, and seven year olds are up to many wonderful things! In particular, they have begun to celebrate one another through the "Star Student" activity. Each month will highlight one special student  (This month's student is Matthew G.). The Star Student gets to design his/her own bulletin board (family photos, projects, etc.) to be displayed for the whole month. The Star's classmates make a very special project (a "friendship quilt") for their friend.
