Providing thoughtful and individualized intervention services for every child

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapy department's central purpose is to promote development and enhance educational performance skills. To do so requires a careful analysis of the neurobiological foundations of skilled movement control, learning and behavior. We view the child, the child's environment and the interaction between the two in a holistic way. It is the dynamic nature between the two that is central to our treatment philosophy.

By observing the child's functional performance within different environments we are better able to identify how a child receives and interprets information from the sensory systems and then organizes that information to meet the demands of the environment.

Through the use of purposeful activity, we provide meaningful interventions that promote growth and development in targeted performance areas.

Physical Therapy
Physical Therapists at Lake Drive School, as in any educational setting, work with children's physical needs that may limit their ability to receive an education. We evaluate a student's ability to access the entire school setting safely and efficiently including the classrooms, lunchroom, bathroom, gym, playground and the bus.

Physical Therapists assess students by administering and interpreting tests and measurements of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensori-motor functions. Our goal is to assist students in developing their gross motor skills for mobility and stability to function at their best in school.

Our Program

Comprehensive and free diagnostic evaluation

Screening program

Occupational therapy and physical therapy are available to every student via one or more of the following service delivery models:

Direct Intervention is provided in either individual or group sessions. The location of the intervention is determined by the task requirements. Therapy may occur in the OT/PT suite or, in cases where practicing targeted skills in a natural context will enhance performance, integrated into the classroom routine.

Consultation with all support staff is an integral part of any student's OT or PT program, including adaptations to the learning environment. Occupational therapy services are provided weekly to Briarcliff School and the High School.

Monitoring of a student's continued sensory and motor ability to meet the expectations of the educational placement is provided.

Home Programs are developed and instruction provided.

Adaptive Equipment needs are assessed for all students. These include appropriate seating as well as any materials that may enhance educational performance skills.

The Occupational Therapy department supports and augments classroom instruction of written communication outputs, such as handwriting and keyboarding.
